Additionally, it includes pertinent information from the HMT, ERG, NIOSH, and other sources, along with the appropriate placard and hazard class for each material.

The Hazardous Materials Table (HMT) 49 CFR §172.101 is a comprehensive list of hazardous materials categorized by proper shipping name. It governs the transportation, marking, and labeling of hazardous materials by all modes of transportation: air, water, rail, and highway. Acquiring a solid understanding of the information in the HMT is essential for ensuring compliance.

The Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) primarily serves as a reference guide to assist first responders in quickly identifying and addressing the specific or generic hazards associated with the materials involved in an incident. It aims to protect both responders and the general public during the initial response phase. The ERG is updated and released every four years by the Department of Transportation (D.O.T.).
